It is important to know about IELTS essays because there are different types of essays and they require different ways to respond to them.

However, as you can see in the instructions on this page, they can all follow the same basic structure.

Here are some types of IELTS essays you can take:

I accept / disagree
Discuss two points
Advantages and disadvantages
Causes (causes) and solutions
Causes (causes) and consequences
Problems and solutions

Not every essay fit one of these patterns, but most do.

You can confuse some of these tasks. For example, you can express your opinion on an issue and then discuss its advantages or disadvantages.

The golden rule is to ALWAYS read the question carefully to know what you are being asked to do.

The IELTS essay is structured like other essays; you just have to shorten it. There are three main elements:

Introduction
Body paragraphs
Conclusion

Using the above essay question as an example, we will consider each of them in turn.

1.Introduction

As a result, you should write your introduction for the IELTS essay properly. Keep in mind that you only have 40 minutes to write an essay, and you should spend part of that time planning. Therefore, you need to write your introduction very quickly so that you can start writing your body paragraphs.

You Only Need to Do Two Things:

Say the topic of the essay using some basic facts (you can learn from the question)
Also, tell me what you need or want to write about in essay

Here is an example of an introduction to the above essay question about IT:

Over the last twenty years, there have been major changes in the impact of IT on people’s lives, and there have been many advances in this area. However, while these technological advances have brought many benefits to the world, I firmly believe that these changes in the field of IT will have more negative than positive effects.

As you can see, the first sentence makes sure it is relevant to the topic (IT) and uses the facts about IT from the question. Note that these are translated – you should not copy from the rubric!

Then the second part clearly defines what the essay will be about and confirms the opinion of the writers (some questions may not ask your opinion, but it is). The writer clearly agrees because he thinks there will be more negative effects.

2) Main Paragraphs

For an IELTS essay, you should have 2 or 3 main paragraphs – no more and no less.

For a paragraph on your body, each paragraph should have a control idea and there should be sentences that confirm it.

Let’s look at the first paragraph of an essay on IT. The essay is about the advantages and disadvantages of IT, so they will need to be discussed in separate paragraphs.

Here Is the First Main Paragraph:

On the plus side, email has made communication much simpler and faster, especially abroad. This has led to many advantages for sales and business, as there is no need to spend weeks waiting for letters or sending faxes, which is a thing of the past. In addition, the World Wide Web now means that we have information on any topic. For example, people can get news, medical advice, online training courses and much more online. These changes have made life much easier and more comfortable for many.

The control idea in this first paragraph is “Advantages of IT,” and there are two supporting ideas, underlined. No shortcomings will be discussed, as the paragraph will subsequently lose its relevance.

Much of the essay focuses on the negative aspects of IT, as the author says there are more negative effects in the introductory part. So, the next two paragraphs are about that.

The topic sentence in the next paragraph says that we are shifting our focus to the negative points:

However, the impact of this new technology is not all that beneficial. For example, many believe that the widespread use of e-mail is destroying traditional forms of communication such as correspondence, telephone and face-to-face conversations. This can lead to a decrease in people’s ability to communicate and communicate with each other on a daily basis.

The Final Main Paragraph Provides the Final Negative Impact:

In addition, the large size of the Internet means that it is almost impossible to regulate and control it. This has led to many concerns about children accessing inappropriate websites and the spread of computer viruses. Unfortunately, such a problem could only get worse in the future, at least until regulatory systems are in place.

3) Conclusion

The conclusion should consist of only one or two sentences, and you can do the following:

Repeat what the essay is about (rewrite the last sentence of the introduction with different words)

Give some thought about the future

In summary, developments in the field of IT have brought many benefits, but I believe they outweigh these shortcomings. In the future, we will need to address them to avoid harmful effects on people and society.
