Nigo (Tomoaki Nagao), a fashion designer from Japan, established A Bathing Ape (or BAPE) in Ura-Harajuku in 1993. The company operates 19 stores in Japan, including Bape Stores, Bape Pirate Stores, Bape Kids Stores, Bapexclusive Aoyama, and Bapexclusive Kyoto, and is known for its lifestyle and street apparel for men, women, and kids. The Bape Gallery, a location used for various events and art exhibitions sponsored by Bape, is also located in the Kyoto store. Hong Kong, Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Qingdao, Shenyang, Seoul, Jakarta, Dubai, New York City, Kuala Lumpur, London, Paris, Miami, and Los Angeles all have stores as well.

The business formerly ran the “Busy Work Shop,” “Bape Cuts” hair shop, “Bape Café,” “BABY MILO,” and “The Cay Soldier.” Additionally, Nigo established the second-tier labels AAPE (by A Bathing Ape) and BAPY (Busy Working Lady). I.T Group, a Hong Kong fashion behemoth, purchased the business in 2011 for roughly $2.8 million. In 2013, Nigo quit the company.

BAPE Hoodie Mean:
